Brucella

The genus Brucella, member of the Brucellaceae family, comprises species like  B. abortus, B. melitensis, B. suis, and B. canis. These may cause brucellosis in humans and animals, also called undulant fever, or Malta fever. Brucellosis is a zoonosis caused by consumtion of contaminated or untreated milk, raw meat or through direct contact with infected animals like sheeps, goats, dogs or pigs. Common microbiological and serological methods for the detection and identification of Brucella spp. are timeconsuming and hazardous for the laboratory staff.

Therefore, the foodproof® Brucella Detection Kit real- time PCR assay was developed to fulfil the need for a rapid, sensitive and specific system for the detection of Brucella spp. and the identification of Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis.
